The head of the faction of the Nuevas Ideas party, deputy Christian Guevara, asked tonight to modify the legislative agenda to incorporate and approve with a waiver of paperwork the reform to the Electoral Code that will allow the number of deputies to be reduced from 84 to 60. The initiative was approved with 63 votes.

The bill will end the vote counting system, eliminating deputies due to residues. “No more deputies for waste,” President Nayib Bukele reacted via Twitter.

That same night, the Minister of the Interior, Juan Carlos Bidegaín, delivered to the president of the Assembly, Ernesto Castro, the proposal to reduce the number of deputies and municipalities, as the Salvadoran president proposed on June 1.

The initiative to reduce the number of mayoralties, from 262 to 44, went to the study of the municipal commission, while the reduction in the number of legislators will be discussed and approved in the plenary session that takes place this Tuesday, in such a way that the next legislation of 2024 is made up of only 60 parliamentarians.

Deputies from Nuevas Ideas said they were ready to cast their vote for the bill, and at the same time celebrated that from now on what is established by law in article 78 of the Political Constitution will be respected: «The vote will be free, direct, equal and secret”.
