Montebelluna, Mattia di Battistetti’s mother: “It was dinner time, an incredible emotion: she expressed solidarity with us and called for justice on the death of our son”
MONTEBELLUNA. Great emotion and emotion Monday 6 September evening in the Battistetti house when the phone call from the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, arrived. They had a start when, picking up the phone, they realized that the call was coming from the Quirinale. Then they were moved when they heard the words of solidarity expressed by Sergio Mattarella.
It was dinner time, Monday, at the Battistetti house, around 7 pm. The phone rang. Mattia’s sister Anna picked up the handset of the landline phone: when she was asked to speak to Mrs. Monica she passed the phone to her mother. The president introduced himself and, at that point, an emotional conversation began.
The Battistetti had written to the President of the Republic, to him as to the other institutions, so that the light on death at work would not go out of a 23-year-old young man – their son Mattia – and on Monday evening, when the phone call from the Quirinale arrived, they were moved at the Battistetti house.
President Mattarella on the phone wanted to express his closeness to the family, making a reference to the need for safety in the workplace.
“The president’s words were of great sensitivity,” says Monica Michielin, Mattia Battistetti’s mother. «He said he was close to us and aware of the immense drama we are experiencing, he also said he was disconcerted by what happened. The president then hoped that justice would be done because it is not possible to accept that a 23-year-old boy goes to work and never returns home. He added that safety in the workplace must be the first guarantee that an employer must ensure its employees. At the end of the phone call he offered us his support ».
The phone call from the President of the Republic was therefore the answer to the letter that the Battistetti family had written to him a few weeks earlier. In that letter they had told him how his 23-year-old son had been killed by a load of scaffolding unhooked from a crane in a construction site in via Magellano, in Montebelluna, and they explained to him what despair they were experiencing every day. But they had also written about their strength and will to carry on the battle for justice for their son who was a victim of work.
Touching words, which led the President of the Republic, on Monday evening, to pick up the phone and call the Battistetti family to express his closeness and the need for safety in the workplace.
“President Mattarellhe has shown himself to be a person of great sensitivity and availability », adds Giovanni Battistetti, Mattia’s father. “We knew it was him after my wife went on the phone and they introduced themselves. At the end of the phone call he made us understand that we can contact him again if we need it ».
No news, for the moment, on the judicial front for this death at work which took place on April 29th in the construction site of via Magellano in Guarda, where the goodhe had been overwhelmed by a load of scaffolding that had unhooked from the crane.
The investigation is going on amidst appraisals and memories and, at present, it sees a dozen registered in the register of suspects, a bit of all those who may have had to do with that crane and its load: from the owner of the construction company to the crane operator, from the safety manager to the company that had overhauled the crane that was first in a building site in viale Matteotti, to then be sent for overhaul and then installed in the site in via Magellano.
«We still have no news on the judicial front», confirms Giovanni Battistetti, «the investigation has not yet been closed. We trust that times will not last long because we want truth and justice for our son».
