Doctors ask Petro not to talk about health treatments without a scientific basis

This Monday, medical associations asked the Colombian president, Gustavo Petro, to refrain from making comments about health treatments without having a scientific basis so as not to misinform the population, in the midst of a controversy over the shortage of insulin in the country.

In recent months, patients with diabetes have warned about the difficulties in obtaining insulin, which critics of the Government attribute to poor management by the Ministry of Health to impose the controversial reform of the sector that is being processed in Congress.

In response to criticism, Petro stated Friday that the problem with insulin is that it is being used in weight loss treatments.

“People using the health system to lose weight through insulin while diabetics have no control,” said Petro, which has earned him criticism from medical associations because his comment can lead people to believe that insulin helps to lose weight. weight, which is not true, and it is also dangerous for health because if used by a person with normal sugar levels it can cause hypoglycemia and even death.

The Colombian Association of Internal Medicine (ACMI) stated in a statement that “insulin (…) is only indicated for the treatment of the disease known as diabetes mellitus, therefore it is not part of the therapeutic group for the management of diabetes.” obesity”.

“We reiterate the importance of the different scientific associations that exist in our country so that they are taken into account when issuing this series of technical concepts since the inappropriate use of some terms, words or phrases can generate confusion and misinformation to the community in general and especially patients with diabetes,” the ACMI indicated.
