Volpiano, the redeveloped oratory, sports facilities and swimming pool The 54-year-old parish priest greets the city that loved him after 9 years

VOLPIANO

The redeveloped oratory and the start of works for the construction of a new sports complex, including an outdoor swimming pool, are the two gifts that don Claudio Bertero, 54, leaves the Volpianesi. Last Sunday the parish priest officiated his last mass in the parish church of Saints Peter and Paul: after nine years he leaves the city to teach at the Lateran University in Rome. Tomorrow, Thursday 7 October, he will meet Pope Francis. The parish multi-sports center project includes three steps for a total value of 370 thousand euros. Of these 200 thousand derive from the donation of the Mossetto family, through the homonymous Foundation, while the rest come from a memorandum of understanding signed with the Municipality. And it includes a further extension of the oratory made possible by the demolition of 12 small dilapidated buildings purchased by the parish.

“In this way – says Don Claudio – we will not only enlarge the courtyard of the San Giuseppe Oratory, frequented by hundreds of children and young people, but we will be able to build an outdoor covered stage for events, obtain parking spaces for volunteers and a space for the preparation of the mechanical crib. Without forgetting the ongoing contribution to the redevelopment of the historic center for some time ». In addition, with the municipal administration, Don Claudio has redeveloped the building that houses the Caritas where food packages are still prepared for families in difficulty. A great commitment that is well understood by the community: especially by the boys of the oratory who in yellow T-shirts greeted Don Claudio with a rap song sung on the altar of the church and a banner that says it all: “Together is greater than the sum of the parts” . But the outgoing mayor Emanuele De Zuanne, the representatives of all the associations of the city, the Net consortium, the police and the local fire brigade detachment also greeted the parish priest. Each of them left a tribute. And with Don Claudio to leave the parish of Volpiano are also Don Manuel and Don Valerio, called by the Archbishop of Turin, Monsignor Nosiglia, to other positions. Now to lead the community of the faithful carrying on the work of Don Claudio will be Don Marco Ghiazza, who will make his official entrance on Sunday 10 October. “I leave Volpiano – said don Claudio – rich in the good that each of you has given me”. The religious, originally from Cambiano, after graduating from the seminary in Turin, attended university studies in Rome, where he graduated with 110 cum laude from the Pontifical Lateran University. He was ordained a priest on April 17, 1993 and began his mission as assistant pastor in Santa Giulia in Turin. Subsequently, to deepen his theological studies, he returned to the capital where he obtained a research doctorate in theology with a brilliant thesis on the writings of Pope Ratzinger (his thesis was then awarded, in 2013, as the best research thesis of the academic year). He also worked as a priest in particularly difficult contexts (in the Magliana district in Rome), obtaining good results, praised by the then Cardinal Ruini. He was parish priest in Rivoli and Pozzo Strada di Torino, before arriving in Volpiano in 2012. –
