Draghi: “The summit filled our words with substance. It was a success, it was not easy to find an agreement. Lay the foundations for a fairer recovery “

Shortly after 4 pm Mario Draghi pulls the ranks of this Italian-led G20. He does so in his concluding speech, summarizing the most meaningful goals that have been achieved. Starting with vaccines, “insured for the poorest countries”, he stresses up to the climate: “the commitment is to zero emissions in the middle of the century”. In short, two points that seemed very distant on the eve of the summit and now, instead, closer, more concrete. “For the next five years – underlines the head of the government – Italy will triple its financial commitment to 1.4 billion a year”. More simply, as the Italian premier explains, “At this summit we have ensured that our dreams are still alive”, but now we must “make sure we turn them into facts. I want to thank the activists who keep us on the right track. Many say they are tired of blah blah, I believe this summit was full of substance “. And the substance to understand it as Mario Draghi is in the numbers: zero emissions in the middle of the century, 1.5 degrees of Co2 up to that date and the Italian commitment to the environment tripled to 1.4 billion a year. In this sense, the head of government emphasizes, “one of the successes achieved at the G20 is that we have decided to leave coal behind with a stop to funding for power plants in 2021”. Of course, it is a step forward even if there is still a long way to go. So much so that Draghi says, “This is just the beginning, there are many crises and all this requires action.” Certainly, he points out, “we are proud of the results obtained but it is only the beginning”. Then an hour later, Prime Minister Mario Draghi comes to the press conference, thanking all those who have collaborated in the success of this “extraordinary G20”. “This summit is only a final moment of this work – says Draghi – The result on the minimum tax had been pursued for decades”. “We have intensified the links between finance and health.” In fact, the Italian premier summarizes, “it was a success, it was not easy to find an agreement”. From here, also thanks to the ministers Di Maio and Franco. “From here – he continues – we have also laid the foundations for a more equitable recovery”: this G20, therefore, “makes me confident in the newly found ability to face epochal challenges, challenges that we cannot win alone”. Also because, “those of Covid, climate, health, inequalities are epochal and existential challenges that we face or have faced”. Furthermore, to those who asked about China and the difficulties of discussing the climate, the premier replied that, in reality, “there was a greater willingness of both China and India to accept the agreement” with the agreement at 1 , 5 degrees of emissions .: «I expected a more rigid attitude from them». Then, answering a question on the subject, Draghi stressed that “Pope Francis is an ally not only of the G20 but for everything concerning the climate and the conservation of the Earth”.
