Dragons, ecological transition and culture are central to the government agenda

«This year’s Soft Power Conference takes place during the Italian presidency of the G20. The conference’s central themes – environmental transition and the role of culture in post-pandemic recovery – are central to our multilateral agenda. I am particularly happy that the event takes place in Venice: few cities in the world are as rich in culture as Venice is, and at the same time so vulnerable ».

This is what Prime Minister Mario Draghi writes in a message sent for the Soft Power Conference organized by Francesco Rutelli in Venice from 30 to 31 August at the Cini Foundation and the Ca ‘Foscari University.

Draghi’s speech

«Dear Francesco, dear participants, this year’s Soft Power Conference takes place during the Italian Presidency of the G20. The conference’s central themes – environmental transition and the role of culture in post-pandemic recovery – are central to our multilateral agenda. I am particularly happy that the event takes place in Venice: few cities in the world are as rich in culture as Venice is, and at the same time so vulnerable. Last July, our government decided to severely restrict the access of large cruise ships to the Venetian Lagoon. We want to promote a paradigm of ever greater sustainability for our tourism industry and we are ready to support citizens and businesses in this challenging and costly transition. The eyes of the world are on Venice – they always have been. We believe this decision can serve as a model for other governments in their commitment to promote greater environmental awareness and protect cultural heritage. I don’t think there is a better way to exercise our soft power. I wish your conference a great success and a pleasant stay in Venice for all of you ».
