DRC: 3 dead during an attack by the Twirwaneho militia against a military position in Uvira

Calm is observed this Thursday, March 7 in Nyawaranga, in the Bijombo group, Uvira territory (South Kivu), where fighting had opposed the day before Twirwaneho militiamen and allies to a mixed patrol of FARDC combat and the army Burundian. The toll shows three dead and several injured, according to military sources.

The task force’s mixed combat patrol left Mugeti village and headed towards the Nyawaranga area to identify Twirwaneho’s forward positions with their allies.

Before arriving at the summit, the Congolese and Burundian soldiers had been spotted by the attackers. The latter left the summit and came to ambush at the foot of the mountain, using both banks of the Kanangananga river.

Local sources say the attackers launched a rocket at the patrol.

Three FARDC elements fell on the spot, another was injured. In the exchanges of fire that followed, a battalion commander from Twirwaneho, named Mudakikwa, was killed and three other militiamen injured.

The task force succeeded in dislodging the enemy, before taking control of the entire mountainous area.

The head of the Bijombo group, Amisi Tete, confirms that this attack took place far from the village, in the bush of Nyawaranga, where there was an absence of the civilian population.

The military source does not speak of any movement of civilian populations following this attack; due to the fact that the entire area towards Kiyamba and Bijabo is occupied by fighters from the Twirwaneho group and allies.

The spokesperson for the Sokola 2 South South Kivu operational sector, Lieutenant Marc Elongo, promised to comment on this.
