Drowning and poisoning from engine fumes continue the tragedies of migrants at sea

Other deaths at sea, between Libya and Tunisia. After the 20 in front of Libya, denounced yesterday by the IOM, the Tunisian Red Crescent today announced that 17 Bangladeshi migrants who were in the hold of a boat that left Zuwara, western Libya on Monday evening, died poisoned by the fumes of the burning engine of the boat. The other occupants, about 300, were rescued by the coastguards of Libya and Tunisia. The incident occurred off the Tunisian city of Zarzis, where 166 surviving migrants were brought. The others were taken to Libya. The main countries of origin are Bangladesh, Morocco, Egypt, Syria and Ivory Coast.
These are days of departures, from the coast of Africa to Europe, in a central Mediterranean emptied of humanitarian NGO ships. As happened yesterday, even today dozens of migrants arrived autonomously in Lampedusa with boats left from Libya and Tunisia. The hotspot of the Imbriacola district is saturated again, exceeding 700 presences, even if in the meantime the transfers to Sicily continue: 100 this morning were boarded on the ferry to Porto Empedocle. The Prosecutor of Agrigento, responsible for what happens in the Pelagie archipelago, has made it known that since the beginning of July there have been over eighty landings in Lampedusa, for a total of almost three thousand migrants. Prosecutor Luigi Patronaggio underlined that the investigations, in concert with the Palermo DDA, “continue unabated in order to identify the basists and the organizers of clandestine trips from Libya and Tunisia”. Even today, the police have arrested migrants in Lampedusa who had already been previously deported. Among the migrants who have not reached Europe are the nine, whose bodies are still at the bottom of the sea, between Lampedusa and the islet of Lampione. They were part of the group that was shipwrecked at the end of June and that the Agrigento prosecutor asked the Coast Guard to search with a robot. The bodies were identified earlier this month in and around the sunken boat but now the money is needed to recover them.
Alarm Phone, the “migrant switchboard”, has launched an SOS for a boat with a hundred people whose engine has cut out, off the coast of Libya. The boat is adrift and, according to the NGO, about twenty people ended up in the sea.

Other migrants today have instead attempted to enter Spain through the Moroccan border of Melilla, which with Ceuta is one of the two Spanish enclaves in northern Africa. There are about 230 people, some of whom were injured in clashes with the border police. A landing of 33 Middle Eastern migrants took place today also in Calabria, in Roccella Jonica.
