Earth Day 2024: “Planet versus Plastics”

by admin

Today, April 22, 2024, the 54th edition of Earth Day is celebrated under the motto: “Planet versus Plastics”.

In 1970, the first demonstration was held at the initiative of the American senator and environmental activist Gaylord Nelson, where two thousand universities, more than 10 thousand schools and different communities participated. The environmental movement was beginning to take shape, people were beginning to be aware of atmospheric pollution, the deterioration of ecosystems, and the multiple negative impacts that human action causes on the Earth.

In 1972, the first international conference on the environment, the so-called “Stockholm Earth Summit”, was held to raise awareness among world leaders about the magnitude of environmental problems.

The United Nations Conference on Environment and Development was held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, with outstanding attendance in terms of number of participants and heads of government.

In 2009, the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) proclaimed this day as “International Mother Earth Day”, modifying its name, expressing the need to promote harmony with nature, and a fair balance between economic, social and environmental needs of current and future generations.

That plastic pollutes the planet is old news, because now, this battle against plastic is already personal. Plastics are linked to increased risks of autoimmune disorders, cancer, heart disease, respiratory problems, and many more diseases.

Plastic is affecting all ecosystems, causing new health problems and affecting the global economy. We have the opportunity to restore the Earth and address these problems. A healthy planet is not an option, it is a necessity.

It is proposed to support the United Nations Global Treaty on Plastic, so that its reduction can be materialized.

Hold plastics producers and retailers responsible for the cost of any environmental or health-related damage in accordance with the producer pays principle.

Public and private sector investments in innovation to replace all fossil fuel-derived plastics.

Ban all plastic-related tobacco products, including but not limited to tobacco filters and e-cigarettes.

Ban the export of plastic waste.

End the incineration of plastic waste.

Support innovative solutions and alternatives to plastic in all sectors.

Fully funded public education and awareness campaigns to inform the public about the reasons and strategies to end plastic pollution.

Fast fashion is also sought to be rejected: 100 billion pieces of clothing are manufactured annually, and unfortunately 87% of them end up in landfills or incinerators and only 1% are recycled.

Finally, Global Cleaning actions, community cleaning, are proposed.
