(Essential Questions) Liu Xiangping: What enlightenment does the Revolution of 1911 have for resolving the Taiwan issue and realizing the great cause of cross-strait reunification?

China News Service, Beijing, October 13th, title: What is the enlightenment of the Revolution of 1911 on resolving the Taiwan issue and realizing the great cause of cross-strait reunification?

Author Liu Xiangping, Director of Taiwan Research Institute, Nanjing University

110 years ago, the Xinhai Revolution broke out and the Republic of China was established as the “first democratic republic in Asia.” Taiwan compatriots were particularly excited. The corrupt and traitorous Qing government that signed the Shimonoseki Treaty fell, and the newly established government of the Republic of China must be It will definitely be able to negotiate with Japan, let Taiwan get rid of Japanese colonial rule, return to China, and let Taiwanese become Chinese again! It should be said that as much as Taiwan compatriots hate the Japanese colonists and the Qing government, there are as many expectations of the Republic of China.

That year, some Taiwan compatriots immediately announced that they had given up their Japanese nationality, returned to Chinese nationality, and actively participated in the economic and cultural construction of the motherland. Some compatriots directly launched an armed uprising on the island of Taiwan to resist and overthrow Japanese colonial rule, and did not hesitate to sacrifice their lives for this. From 1912 to 1915, there were about 10 larger scales. Among them, the “Linxupu Uprising” led by Liu Gan in 1912, the “Miaoli Uprising” led by Luo Fuxing in 1913, and the “Xilaian Uprising” led by Yu Qingfang in 1915 shocked the entire island and dealt a great blow to the Japanese colonial rule. As the “person with the most direct relationship with the Revolution of 1911” in Taiwan, Luo Fuxing led the 1913 “Miaoli Uprising” and called for “expulsion of the Japanese” and “restoration of Taiwan”; he personally wrote the “Declaration of the Great Revolution”, pointing out the activities of restoration of Taiwan It is for “the shame of the snow country” to “retribute the enmity of the compatriots”; to declare his purpose in court is to “return the island to Chinese ownership.” These uprisings were directly influenced and led by the Xinhai Revolution and the thinking of Mr. Zhongshan. The leaders of the uprising also tried to go to Guangzhou and Fuzhou to seek arms and material assistance from the mainland of the motherland, but they failed to do so. Finally, they were isolated and helpless, with a determination to die, they resolutely launched an uprising against the Japanese colonialists. Go to death generously and settle down calmly. These uprisings failed, and the insurgents were massacred: after the failure of Liu Gan’s uprising, 12 people were arrested and imprisoned, of which 8 were sentenced to death; the Miaoli uprising failed, and nearly a thousand people were arrested, and 6 people including Luo Fuxing were sentenced. Death penalty: After the failure of the Baba Uprising, 1957 people were arrested and 866 people including Yu Qingfang and Luo Jun were killed. Since then, the mass armed resistance of the Taiwanese people against the Japanese colonialists gradually fell silent, and they were forced to deal with and resist the Japanese colonialists in a “peaceful” and “legal” way.

After the outbreak of the Revolution of 1911, Taiwan compatriots failed in their efforts to return to the motherland. Their historical experience and lessons have the following enlightenment for us today to promote the great cause of the reunification of the motherland:

  1. There must be a strong motherland

In all fairness, Mr. Sun Yat-sen pays special attention to Taiwan. Xingzhonghui directly proposed to “restore Taiwan and consolidate China”, and Mr. Zhongshan himself repeatedly reiterated “restore Taiwan.” When he assumed the post of interim president in Nanjing, he solemnly declared to China and foreign countries that “if China cannot regain Taiwan, it will not be able to stand on the ground.” In the process of preparing for the “Miaoli Uprising,” Hu Hanmin, the governor of Guangdong at the time, and Sun Daoren, the governor of Fujian, both expressed “willing to be a strong backing for the Taiwan uprising.” However, the murder of Song Jiaoren soon occurred in the mainland of the motherland, “the second revolution.” It broke out and failed, Yuan Shikai completely usurped the fruits of the Revolution of 1911, and the “support” of the motherland was in vain. Since then, the mainland of the motherland has been in the predicament of internal and external troubles, poverty and weakness for a long time, and it is simply unable to take care of Taiwan. It can be seen that without a strong motherland, it is impossible for Taiwan to get rid of Japanese colonial rule.

For the moment, it is impossible to win the struggle against “Taiwan independence” by relying solely on the strength of the Taiwan people themselves. Fortunately, our motherland has become stronger. It not only has the will, but also has enough ability to provide strong support for Taiwan compatriots in their just struggle against “Taiwan independence” and to promote the reunification of the motherland.

  2. Have strong leadership

After the outbreak of the Revolution of 1911 and the establishment of the Republic of China, although Mr. Zhongshan and the government of the Republic of China repeatedly declared that they would “recover Taiwan”, the government of the Republic of China did not really pay attention to this issue, did not organize a strong leadership force, and did not formulate and issue relevant information. Policies and measures, and no special institutions have been established. Luo Fuxing, who presided over the Miaoli uprising, was a member of the League, but his actions received little organizational support.

The Communist Party of China is the mainstay of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. The Communist Party of China is the leading core of the cause of socialism with Chinese characteristics. The Communist Party of China is also the most important and strongest force to promote national reunification. With the leadership of the Communist Party of China, the great cause of the reunification of the motherland will surely be realized.

  3. Fully mobilize and rely on the people

For various reasons, neither Mr. Sun Yat-sen nor other members of the League have extensively guided and mobilized the Taiwan compatriots to start the struggle to get rid of Japanese colonial rule. Mr. Sun Yat-sen went to Taiwan three times in September 1900, August 1913, and June 1918. However, he did not have much direct contact with the Taiwanese people and failed to mobilize the masses extensively and deeply. Luo Fuxing and others also only relied on some people and tried to achieve their goals through a purely armed uprising. Without a solid mass base, how can the cause be successful?

At present, the mainland’s Taiwan policy is centered on peaceful development and integrated development. It implements the policy of “Putting Hope on the People of Taiwan” and puts people at the center, allowing more and more compatriots on both sides of the strait to actively participate in the process of promoting the reunification of the motherland. Since then, a majestic trend of opposing “independence” and promoting reunification has been formed.

  4. The separatist forces for “Taiwan independence” should be dealt with severely and relentlessly

When the Revolution of 1911 broke out, Taiwan was under Japanese colonial rule. There were Chinese sons and daughters with strong bones, as well as traitors and “three-legged boys” who served as a betrayal and oppressed their compatriots. The uprisings of compatriots in Taiwan have been reported and destroyed many times by these traitors and “three-legged boys.” Under the protection of the Japanese colonists, they severely hurt the feelings of the Chinese sons and daughters.

The current “Taiwan independence” elements are also doing ugly deeds that harm the interests of the country, nation, and compatriots. They are traitors and “three-legged boys” in the new era, and they are the enemies of the Chinese nation. These “Taiwan independence” elements should be severely condemned and resolutely attacked, and they should not be soft-handed in order to safeguard the fundamental interests of the Chinese on both sides of the strait.

In short, the emergence and evolution of the Taiwan issue is closely related to the fate of the Chinese nation in modern times. The Taiwan issue arose out of national weakness and chaos, and it will surely be resolved with national rejuvenation. The task of resolving the Taiwan issue has fallen on the shoulders of this generation of Chinese people. We should carry forward the great spirit of Sun Yat-sen and other pioneers of the Revolution of 1911, “be an upright Chinese”, stand on the right side of history, oppose “Taiwan independence” and contribute to national reunification.
