Economy: Söder calls for the EU ban on combustion engines to be withdrawn

Munich (dts news agency) – Two months before the European elections, CSU boss Markus Söder sharpened his tone towards Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and accused her of making the wrong decision. “The end of combustion engines for 2035 is wrong and must therefore be withdrawn,” said Söder to “Bild am Sonntag”.

The whole world “likes to drive our cars”, only Europe is putting the brakes on. “Our automobile manufacturers are world leaders in the construction of combustion engines. It is therefore downright absurd to shut down a functioning technology and leave it to other countries in the future.” In 2020, Söder himself called for a ban on combustion engines from 2035. It was then introduced by Commission President and EPP top candidate Ursula von der Leyen (CDU).

Söder seems to hit a nerve with his demand. According to an Insa survey for “Bild am Sonntag” among 1,004 respondents, 61 percent are against the ban on combustion engines from 2035, while only 24 percent are in favor of it. The Bavarian Prime Minister favors government support to strengthen electric cars. “Instead of banning and cutting, we have to allow and encourage. That’s why the federal government must reintroduce the bonus for electric cars. We must not weaken our most important sectors of the economy, but rather strengthen them.”
