Family, is the condition for being able to go to France

(ANSA) – PARIS, JAN 08 – The Egyptian-Palestinian activist Ramy Shaath, released this week after being detained in Egypt for more than two years, is on a plane to Paris but was forced to renounce Egyptian nationality to ensure a release. His family members announced it.

“At the time of writing, Ramy is on his way to Paris”, the family wrote in a statement saying they were “relieved and delighted” at the departure, also regretting that Cairo “forced him to renounce Egyptian citizenship as a prerequisite for his release “.

On Monday, the release of the dissident, one of the founders of the boycott movement of Israel in Egypt, was announced. Shaath, son of Nabil, the former Palestinian foreign minister who was chief negotiator at the time of the Oslo accords, had been in jail on “terrorism” charges for joining the Muslim Brotherhood, publishing fake news, fomenting riots and conducting actions against military and police officers. These are accusations considered spurious by the world of NGOs for the defense of human rights where it is emphasized that Shaath was a peaceful activist who only wanted to create a political platform in view of elections. His court case, as part of the monitoring mechanism by the European Union, was closely followed by the Italian Embassy in Cairo. The release took place “on the evening of January 6, after more than 900 days of arbitrary detention”, the family said. Egyptian authorities then handed him over to a Palestinian Authority representative at Cairo airport, from where he boarded a plane to Amman. (HANDLE).
