CATANIA – Etna’s “stop and go” eruptive activity continues. Shortly before dawn, the volcano returned to “rekindle” with yet another paroxysm from last May 19th. To give “show”, reconstructs the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology-Etna Observatory (Ingv-Oe) of Catania, it is always the South-East crater. The dynamics the same: an increase in Strombolian activity (this time starting at 05.45) with a subsequent surge in the values of the volcanic tremor that reach very high and the change of activity: an intense fountain of lava (06.39 hours) and the emission of a flow and a cloud of pyroclastic material, 6.5 km high above sea level, which headed south-east.
After just under an hour, at 07.45, the lava fountain went out. Then at 08.10 preceded by violent “curtain closed” roars: the instruments of the Ingv-Oe of Catania certify that the eruptive phase has definitively ceased. And suddenly on the volcano peace and silence return which, according to the current “script”, are destined to be interrupted by a probable next paroxysmal phase. Maybe. Because Etna has accustomed researchers and enthusiasts to being an unpredictable “mountain”. Even this last activity of the highest active volcano in Europe had no impact on the operations of the Vincenzo Bellini international airport in Catania.
