Experts from Yunnan Wild Elephant Herd all the way northward: Or will consider adopting artificial auxiliary measures to help elephants find habitats

Recently, a group of wild Asian elephants set off from Xishuangbanna and migrated all the way north, arousing widespread concern in the society. At present, Asian elephants have arrived in Kunming, and the National Forestry and Grass Administration has also organized an expert group to study measures related to the northward migration of the target group.

At present, the expert group uses the methods of containment, food lure, and evacuation of people to modify the travel route of the elephant herd to keep them away from densely populated areas to ensure that the elephant does not harm people and people do not harm the elephant. But as the position of the elephant group is getting more and more north, the expert group is considering a new response plan.

Regarding what measures will be taken in the next step, a CCTV reporter from the Central Station interviewed Chen Mingyong, a member of the expert group, a professor at the School of Ecology and Environment of Yunnan University.

Chen Mingyong said that the use of artificial auxiliary measures is a problem that experts are currently studying, judging and considering. What is the artificial auxiliary measure he said?

Chen Mingyong said that Asian elephants have moved all the way to the north and have been far away from their original habitats and have not yet found a suitable habitat for long-term survival.

If you continue to the north, regardless of altitude, climate characteristics, or plant distribution, it is not a suitable habitat for Asian elephants to survive for a long time, especially if there are a few young elephants in the elephant group that only live on breast milk, if their mothers Long-term lack of food and malnutrition will lead to a decline in physical fitness, which will affect the healthy growth of the young elephants. Climate change and the consumption of long distances will also have a greater impact on the physical fitness of the young elephants, thereby threatening their lives.

So, under what circumstances will artificial auxiliary measures be taken to help Asian elephants find suitable habitats?

Chen Mingyong said that because Asian elephants are huge monsters after all, they may also attack people. We still have to try our best to prevent them from entering cities, towns, and villages. When dense areas pose a very serious threat, some artificial auxiliary measures will be taken to help them return to their original habitats.
