Original Title: For the first time invoking the anti-foreign sanctions law, China’s “peer countermeasures” against US sanctions on Hong Kong

Reference News Network reported on July 25 According to a Reuters report in Beijing/Washington on July 23, China announced on Friday that it will impose counter-sanctions on American individuals, including former U.S. Secretary of Commerce Ross, in response to the recent sanctions imposed by the United States on Chinese officials in Hong Kong.

According to reports, this is the first time China has imposed sanctions under the Anti-Foreign Sanctions Law passed in June this year.

The report also stated that China has also implemented “reciprocal countermeasures” against current and former representatives of a series of agencies, including the “Congress-Executive China Committee” and the “U.S.-China Economic and Security Evaluation Committee.”

According to the report, other institutions named include the “American Society for Democracy in International Affairs”, “American Institute of International Republican Institute”, “Human Rights Watch” and the “Hong Kong Democracy Committee” headquartered in Washington.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China said in a statement: “The U.S. fabricated the so-called’Hong Kong Business Warning’, groundlessly discredited Hong Kong’s business environment, and illegally sanctioned many officials of the Chinese Central Government’s agencies in Hong Kong. The relevant actions seriously violated international law and basic norms of international relations. Seriously interfere in China’s internal affairs.”

The report pointed out that this is the second time this year that China has imposed sanctions on officials who served under former US President Trump. When Biden was sworn in as president in January this year, China announced sanctions against former US Secretary of State Pompeo and 27 other senior Trump administration officials.
