Volpetti from Udine, who graduated from Stellini in 2014, is now one of the youngest Italian teachers in a high school in Florence. At his first experience he had to deal with distance education imposed by the health emergency

UDINE. Maturity is a test for everyone, not just for the students who undergo it. Even for teachers who “inflict” it. Ester Volpetti from Udine, a Greek scholar at the first experience on the other side of the chair, graduated last July at the University of Florence (110 cum laude), and graduated from Stellini in 2014. Now she is a professor of Italian and Greek of the classical high school of Florence, Dante. One of the youngest in Italy. Volpetti minimizes what it means to be the master of specialization subjects who questions at maturity at the age of 26: «I’m a bit tired. I finish on Thursday 24th June. There were no writings this year so it’s easier ».

What year was it?

«I started a two-fifths substitute in December in Distance Learning and I took them to the final exam. It was very strange to meet the students first on screen and then live ».

Two last year classes as a first high school teaching experience in Dad doesn’t seem easy…
«In Tuscany from January onwards we have more or less always stayed in school, at 50%. I don’t deny it was a breath of fresh air to go back to class. We all needed it. ‘

Did the students return to class willingly?
“We all knew that a lot of time had been lost. Not because what you did in Dad wasn’t worth it: the hours are simply shorter, it takes more time to interact. Time in the classroom was considered by all to be precious time ».

But did you have the double staggered morning shift like in Udine?
“No, normal school hours, every other day.”

Did being so young made it easier or harder?
“Easier”.

Not everyone is like that… It is easier to disrespect a young teacher.
“My students wanted and needed a human relationship. We managed to joke around in class. Always with professionalism and attention ».

Did you like this exam?
“It was a fair way. It would have been absurd to evaluate the boys as in normal years: they weren’t. The writings in general, however, are useful “.

Does the oral, with all the professors who already know you, take sides, help?
«With the elaborate they start with the strong point. The role of the external president is fundamental; it values merits that may not have been seen. The boys sought confrontation thanks to this modality. As an address teacher I followed 37 papers ».

Interruption: 37 university mini-theses, all to be delivered in a month or so?
“Well, only ten pages each. Colleagues helped. One guy did a wonderful job on re-evaluating the epic. I wrote to my high school Latin and Greek teacher, Monica De Nardi. I still remember his lessons well. He is my model: he demanded a lot, but he gave a lot ».

What will the kids need next year?
«Of a life with more rules and with a lot of humanity. The rules, given with reasonableness, are not given because they are bad but for their good ».
