[서울=뉴시스]Reporter Jaejun Lee = The Tokyo Shimbun and others reported on the 14th that a German Navy warship will set sail for the Indo-Pacific next month and call in Japan in late August.

Citing diplomatic sources, the media reported that a German frigate is scheduled to depart from a local military port for the Indo-Pacific region on May 7, indicating a strategy to strengthen regional involvement to check China’s attempts to change the status quo in the Taiwan Strait, East China Sea, and South China Sea. He said it was part of it.

Diplomatic sources said that Germany plans to suppress China’s overbearing actions by sending warships to expand solidarity with countries in the region, such as Japan, that share values such as democracy and the rule of law.

This is the first time that Germany has sent a warship to Asia and made a port call in Japan since it formulated a new China strategy in July of last year.

Previously, the German Air Force decided to dispatch fighter jets to the Indo-Pacific region from June to August of this year.

After establishing a strategy for the Indo-Pacific in 2020, Germany sent a frigate as its first warship in 20 years in 2021 and dispatched fighter jets to Japan for the first time in 2022.

A diplomatic source said, “Continuing to send warships and fighter jets shows Germany’s sincerity in focusing its involvement in the Indo-Pacific region.”

Germany will also send a supply ship along with the frigate this year. It participates in the Rim-Pacific joint exercise (RIMPAC) led by the U.S. Navy in Hawaiian waters and also participates in multilateral exercises including the Maritime Self-Defense Force.
