Germany, the Social Democrat Baerbel Bas is the new president of the Parliament

Baerbel Bas is the new president of the German Bundestag. The Social Democrat exponent was elected during the first session of the new chamber after the elections on 26 September last. He succeeds Wolfgang Schaeuble, greeted by the deputies with a standing ovation. The 53-year-old member of the SPD was elected by a very large majority: 724 votes cast, 576 ‘yes’, 90 ‘no’ and 58 abstentions. There are 736 parliamentarians in the newly elected Bundestag, the highest number in the history of the Chamber, more than 709 in 2017. The average age of parliamentarians is 47.5 years, almost a third of the newly elected are under 40.
