Godspeed You! Black Emperor, GOVERNMENT CAME (9980.0kHz 3617.1kHz 4521.0 kHz)
Canadians Godspeed You! Black Emperor never sing in their songs, even if voices are always heard, distant, rarefied, distorted. But they don’t need to sing to spread clear messages. Their new record, G_d’s pee AT STATE’S END!, was accompanied by a press release that included a series of specific requests: “empty the prisons”, “take power away from the police and give it to the neighborhood they terrorize”, “stop wars and imperialism” and “tax the rich to the point of impoverishing them “.

In a year like this (or like these two, it is now time to admit), which seems to come from the imagination of a dystopian writer, it was not difficult to predict that the Canadian band, always politically committed, would make itself felt in some way to reaffirm the concepts already expressed. G_d’s pee AT STATE’S END! it was also premiered with a free streaming event, a concert filmed in analogue at the Imperial Cinema in Montréal. An empty cinema, speaking of messages. As if that weren’t enough, the group asked fans to buy the record from independent stores, many of which received promotional copies.

Ok, but net of political issues as it is G_d’s pee AT STATE’S END!? Recorded in the band’s pandemic Montreal studio and produced by Besnard Lakes’ Jace Lacek, it follows the beautiful Luciferian towers and consists of two suites (in turn separated into shorter pieces) and two pieces of about six minutes each. The best time is GOVERNMENT CAME (9980.0kHz 3617.1kHz 4521.0 kHz), the beginning of the second suite, between electric guitars, crepuscular choirs and a final pulled by a violin that makes one think of Warren Ellis’ Dirty Three. The initial Military alphabet instead it opens with metallic voices, the sound of a helicopter and a guitar that sounds like it Star sprangled banner di Hendrix a Woodstock, mentre Fire at static valley it’s the most post-rock thing the band has ever done (a genre they don’t particularly like to be associated with). It’s a solid job, certainly not the best of their career but still appreciable. Few bands are better suited than Godspeed You! Black Emperor to make the soundtrack of a pandemic.

serpentwithfeet, Hyacinth
Among the most interesting voices in the US queer rnb scene, serpentwithfeet was born in Baltimore but lives in Los Angeles. His new record, Deacon, is a collection of highly inspired and sensual love songs, with a gospel aftertaste that adds depth to the pieces. The oddity award is won by the text of Hyacinth: “He never needed silverware, but I am his spoon”, sings serpentwithfeet.

Cassandra Jenkins, Michelangelo
Cassandra Jenkins’ second album, An overview on phenomenal nature, is a small sonorous jewel, between minimalism and songwriting. His ethereal voice sticks to your ears and never goes away. After Weather Station, another musician demonstrates how folk can expand beyond its borders.

Hiatus Kaiyote, Get sun
In their new single Hiatus Kaiyote, a kind of white and Australian version of Erykah Badu, got help from the historic Brazilian producer Verocai, who oversaw the strings and the horn section of the song. Good choice. The album, titled Mood valiant, will arrive on June 25th.

Olivia Rodrigo, already seen
Olivia Rodrigo makes love songs for teenagers, nothing more, nothing less. But he knows how to do it. His previous single, Driver’s licence, became a global hit in a few days and the new song, already seen, has all the credentials to do very well in the standings. Rodrigo proves to have metabolized the best of mainstream pop in recent years, from Taylor Swift to Billie Eilish, and together with the co-authors of her music she is good at telling simple stories well. This time a girl accuses her ex of doing everything she did with her new flame, including listening to Billy Joel. Not too Gen Z, actually.

P.S. Updated playlist, good listening!
