Government suspends ceasefire with dissidents in three regions

The Colombian Government suspended this Sunday in three departments the bilateral ceasefire with the Central General Staff (EMC), one of the main dissidents of the FARC, after that group attacked an indigenous community in the southwest of the country on Saturday.

Through a decree signed by the Minister of Defense, Iván Velásquez, the Executive decreed “the suspension of the Bilateral and Temporary Ceasefire of a National nature with Territorial Impact (CFBTNT) between the National Government and the Central General Staff of the FARC-EP in the departments of Nariño, Cauca and Valle del Cauca.

«Consequently, order the resumption of offensive military operations and police operations starting at 00:00 on March 20, 2024 against the structures of the Central General Staff of the FARC-EP present in the Departments of Nariño, Cauca and Valle del Cauca”, reads decree 0385 of March 17, 2024.

The suspension of the ceasefire comes after an attack perpetrated by the group involved in the peace process against the indigenous minga.

«After the minga left Puerto Resistencia in Cali, where a dialogue with me was taking place and proposals from municipal committees of popular forces were being launched to start the constituent process, it was subject to an armed attack in Toribío, Cauca, by the Central General Staff,” declared the head of state. He added that this act constitutes a violation of the agreement that was in force since January of this year and that extended until July 15, with the possibility of being extended.

The attack on Saturday was perpetrated by the Dagoberto Ramos column of the Central General Staff (EMC) in the hamlet of La Bodega, located in Toribío (Cauca), when members of the community tried to prevent armed individuals from said group from taking a minor. old.

According to the councils, “without saying a word, these criminals responded to the community’s attempt by shooting indiscriminately,” which resulted in serious injuries to Carmelina Yuli Paví, guard and leader of the Nasa people of Toribío, as well as to the community member Rodrigo Ul Musicué . In addition, a third person was slightly injured by a bullet.

In a statement, the indigenous councils denounced that after the attack, “those responsible for this cowardly act fled in a van, shooting again at the community to make their way with blood and fire.”

“This act shows the decomposition and criminal behavior of this armed group that proclaims itself as ‘revolutionary’, but is dedicated to kidnapping, disappearance, murder and coercion of our community,” the councils added in their statement.

For his part, the Colombian president, Gustavo Petro, assured this Sunday that the attack in Toribío represents a violation of the bilateral ceasefire in force between the Government and the EMC.

“With this fact, the EMC of Cauca violates the ceasefire agreement,” said the president on the X social network.
