Gustavo Petro, the only Latin American leader invited to the World Security Conference in Munich

This Thursday, February 15, the President of the Republic, Gustavo Petro, arrived in Munich, Germany, to participate in the World Security Conference, where he will advocate his approach in the fight against the climate crisis.

According to the Foreign Ministry, Petro is the only South American head of state invited to this event, which is traditionally reserved for European or Euro-Atlantic leaders. “He will also participate in its opening panel. “This space has traditionally been reserved for heads of state in Europe or the Euro-Atlantic space,” stated the Foreign Ministry.

Likewise, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed: “Petro will share the opening of the Conference with panelists such as the Secretary General of the UN, António Guterres; the president of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo and the prime minister of Barbados, Mia Mottley. In total, 450 senior political representatives are expected to attend.”

“In this scenario, the head of state will have the opportunity to present a country vision on security issues from a comprehensive perspective, which includes the challenges of peace, the climate crisis, the world drug problem and a just energy transition,” added the Foreign Ministry.

“The conference program, unlike previous years in which it revolved around the security crisis and the aggression against Ukraine, focuses this time on diverse aspects in which Colombia has enormous leadership potential, such as: crisis of the global security model, energy transition, fight against climate change, resource management and construction of resilient supply chains, crisis of democracy and reform of multilateral organizations”, stated the national government.

“This year, the event will be attended by prominent international leaders, including the president of Lebanon, Guatemala, Qatar, Iraq, the king of Jordan, the vice president of the United States, Kamala Harris, among others,” indicated the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

According to the Foreign Ministry, it is an annual event in which political, military leaders and security experts meet. Traditionally, it has been an open forum in which political leaders express their differences in a more direct way than in diplomatic statements, and it has, therefore, been an important source of analysis to diagnose the state of the priorities of the different States and civil society leaders facing problems concerning international security.
