The second phase expansion project of Meilan Airport, which was put into operation on the 2nd, was regarded as a major landmark project in the construction of Hainan Free Trade Port. Hu Zhenjiang, deputy director of the Civil Aviation Administration of China, stated at the launching ceremony of the second phase of Meilan Airport that Hainan has initially taken shape with Haikou Meilan Airport and Sanya Phoenix Airport as the main backbone, supplemented by Qionghai Boao Airport and Sansha Yongxing Airport. After the second phase of the expansion project is put into operation, Meilan Airport has added nearly 10,000 square meters of duty-free shopping commercial area on outlying islands, and will stabilize Meilan Airport as a duty-free shopping hub, providing tourists with a richer and more convenient shopping experience.
At the same time, the expanded Meilan Airport is also a platform for the development of Haikou’s modern logistics and airport industries. Meilan Airport Phase II International Cargo Terminal covers an area of 15,000 square meters. After it is put into operation, the supporting service system, port functions, customs clearance capabilities and operating environment of Meilan Airport’s international cargo will be further improved. Recently, the General Administration of Customs announced that the Hainan Free Trade Port’s Yangpu Free Trade Port Zone’s “first-line liberalization, second-line management” import and export management system will be extended to the Haikou Comprehensive Bonded Zone and Haikou Airport Comprehensive Bonded Zone.
The upgrade of infrastructure and the further release of policy dividends means that after the completion of the Haikou Airport Comprehensive Bonded Zone, it will rely on the advantages of “free trade port + airport + special customs supervision area” to develop aircraft bonded maintenance, financial leasing, aviation material trade, air express, and cross-border electricity. Under the influence of multiple rounds of the epidemic this year, Hainan’s air transportation market has performed well, with airport passenger throughput and cargo and mail throughput both increasing year-on-year by more than 20%.
