PIEVE DI CADORE. Maybe a distraction or maybe a wrong footing cost their life to Carlo Ghedin, 47 years old, originally from Latisana, but living in Pocenia in the province of Udine.
The man left home yesterday morning, May 8, to reach the top of the Roda peak in the municipality of Pieve di Cadore. It was supposed to be a simple climb, but instead it turned into one tragedy.
Ghedin got there on the top, but then slip first on a ledge, and then in a gully where he met his death, after a flight of a hundred meters.
The call to 118 arrived directly from the 47-year-old from Friuli around 2 pm: the hiker reported that he had fallen from the Roda peak, that he had been injured and that he was slipping.
The man, however, at this point, he never answered to calls from the operations center trying to locate him.
After providing the coordinates of the summit, the Suem helicopter di Pieve di Cadore started the overflight, unfortunately identifying the lifeless body by Carlo Ghedin under a rock drop, a hundred meters lower from the ridge path.
Landed with a winch 60 meters long, the helicopter rescue technician has equipped a fixed rope, awaiting the arrival of two rescuers from Pieve di Cadore, boarded by the air ambulance in support of the operations.
Reassembled and boarded, the body was secured in the snow in an easier point for recovery maneuvers of the helicopter. The body was then transported to the Nebbiù football field, to be entrusted to the hearse.

THE RECONSTRUCTION OF THE ACCIDENT
According to an initial reconstruction of the facts, Carlo Ghedin was near the top when he lost my balance sliding along the steep side wall, from where he could only sound the alarm, before tumbling among the rocks.
The 2,229-meter-high Roda Peak is one isolated top, scarcely frequented perhaps also due to a difference in height to be overcome of about 1,500 meters, from which you can enjoy a fascinating view towards the valley of the center of Cadore.
And perhaps it may have been a distraction caused by the wonder for this landscape that contributed to the tragic accident.

THE EXPERT’S ADVICE
«At high altitude, above two thousand meters it is still there a lot of snow“, Specifies Alex Barattin, provincial head of the Alpine Rescue,” and even if it does not appear, underneath there is also some ice. So you need to pay attention all the time. The ascent to the peak is not particularly demanding, it has a slope of about 30-40 degrees, but when you slide, if you don’t find the vegetation that stops you, unfortunately the fall has no brakes ».
Then Barattin launches an appeal to hikers who go to the mountains: «When you get to the top it is easy for your attention to drop because you have reached your destination, because the landscape that opens up in front of you is very beautiful, fascinating. My invitation, on the other hand, is a always remain attentive, especially vigilant if you are on the ridge and moving on slippery ground. So you have to stay focused until you return to the valley, until you reach the parked car ».
