PALUZZA. He had gone out with a friend on a hike. But Giovanni Cattaino, a 66-year-old doctor from Tolmezzo, recently retired, slipped and crashed while climbing the Senza Confini via ferrata at Passo Monte Croce Carnico.
When the rescuers from the Forni Avoltri station arrived, there was nothing for him to do.The accident in the mountains occurred after noon on Sunday, 11 July, in the municipality of Paluzza.
Cattaino was well known in the world of regional climbing for having equipped many crags in Carnia and for the blog Calcarea, very popular with professionals. Cattaino was also well known outside the region.
The doctor was in the company of a friend and had just completed the via ferrata, at an altitude of 1640 meters, then he had untied himself from the safety cable, when he slipped after losing grip from the ground due to the rain, falling thirty meters below. Someone alerted the rescuers by first informing an acquaintance of Cattaino who in turn alerted the rescuers.
Shocked the person who was with him and also other people who were making the same journey and probably witnessed the scene.
The rain and cloud cover created some problems for the rescuers who managed to reach the place where the regional helicopter rescue also landed.
