Home schooling boom in Italy: pupils tripled with the pandemic

by admin

In the United States it is known as ‘homeschooling’ and is a well-known alternative form of school-age education. Slowly it is also becoming so in Italy, where it is called parental education. Thanks to the pandemic, the pupils who study “at home” in Italy (and then take the exam at school to be admitted to the following year) have tripled in the space of three years. According to data from the Ministry of Education (published by beraking latest news), in fact, it has gone from 5,126 homeschoolers in 2018-2019 to 15,361 in 2020-2021. With an interlude of 6,212 students in 2019-2020.

Distribution by school

The distribution by school order is interesting: especially the little ones study at home. In 2018-2019, 2,243 children attended primary school at home; in 2019/2020 the small homeschoolers rose to 2,926 and in 2020-2021 the peak, 10,046.
In middle school, or lower secondary school if you prefer, the ministerial data speak of 2,058 students “at home” in 2018-2019; in 2019-2020 the number rises to 2,256 and in 2020-2021 it almost doubles to 4368.
On the other hand, the attendance at high school is limited. Although the pandemic still influenced the performance of the “parental” secondary schools, 825 boys were enrolled in the 2018-2019 school year. Which first became 1,030 in 2019-2020 and then dropped back to 947 in 2020-2021.

The breakdown by region

Homeschooling, again according to the Ministry data acquired by beraking latest news, is more popular in the North, primarily in Lombardy where it has gone from 617 (in 2018/19) to 775 (in 2019/20) up to 2,248 students (in 2020/21); at the Center it stands out in Lazio with 478 homeschoolers in 2018-2019, 656 in 2019-2020 and 1,408 in 2020-202; in the South, Sicily is the region in which there are more students enrolled in courses started at home: 424 three years ago, 482 two years ago and 1,014 last year.
