Hotels in Belluno, it’s a sold out August with the unknown factor Cortina

BELLUNO. Mid-August in chiaroscuro hues. “We are sold out », confirms Paolo Pais, owner of the Albergo Centrale in Auronzo, but also with reference to the colleagues of the tourist consortium of which he is president.

“Yes, the first three weeks of August are full on the Dolomite passes”, says from Pordoi, Osvaldo Finazzer, manager of the Gonzaga hotels and Savoy.

Walter De Cassan, provincial president of Federalberghi and that he leads “La Baita” to Andraz, he says he is “satisfied with these two weeks at the turn of August 15th, but”, he adds, “fifteen days are not enough to save a season”.

This, then, is one side of the coin.

The other side is that of Cortina, where hoteliers expected a great pre and post August 15th. Instead? “Instead there is not the full house we expected », admits Roberta Alverà, dynamic and appreciated president of the Hoteliers Association of the Ampezzo valley. “We are going through days of unexpected uncertainty, between cancellations that we did not expect just before August 15th, bookings that are taking over, but not to an extent that compensates for the first ones”.

The fact is that between 10 and 15% of hotel rooms in and around Cortina are still available. Which, on the other hand, did not happen last summer and not even in the previous mid-August.

“Uncertainty”, explains Alverà, “it is not only given by the weather conditions that make you mad for their fickleness but above all by the pandemic and from anti-Covid measures, especially as regards foreign arrivals ».

In fact, the first groups of Americans think about canceling the reservations who had blocked the rooms. Again with regard to Cortina, bookings for September and October are also slowing down.

«Obviously, as always, we Ampezzo operators we want to be confident, at all costs», Emphasizes Alverà. “We are working to ensure that the season continues in the best possible way and there can also be a positive evolution thanks to further vaccinations, tampons and government measures”.

What is certain is that if the foreign groups who have booked for September no longer arrive at the foot of the Tofane, some hotels have already planned to bring the closure earlier around the time of the beginning of the schools.

However, foreigners are not lacking in the province but it is not about the crowds of the past. “On the steps we have Germans, Dutch, Belgians. These nations are also booking for September, provided that, ”Finazzer explains,“ the infections do not start to grow again, causing new restrictions ”.

Even yesterday 8 August, as has been happening for some time now, the high altitudes were stormed by vacationers and mountain commuters. It thus happens that the Sass Pordoi cable car, which opens until 5 pm, has to extend the service beyond 6 pm, in some cases until 7 pm, due to the large mass of users to be taken downstream. Queues that are formed because the capacity is limited by the anti-Covid rules. In any case, there are days of bad weather where it is really conholding the use of the ski lifts.

President De Cassan breathes a deep sigh of relief admitting that “finally the operators are a little more calm: this week and next the coverage is close to 100%, without that asphyxiating pressure of last summer. The June budget is insufficient, the July budget is better but not entirely sufficient. Weather problems in particular ». What about September? “Reservations will come at the last moment. We keep our fingers crossed for the first part of next month, at least until schools open. What is certain is that this summer he is rediscovering hotel hospitality ».

The positive trend of Auronzo also reflects that of Falcade and other towns in the Belluno area, from Alleghe to Comelico.Tourists from Veneto and Italy do not betray. There are all those who were supposed to be there during this time.

«When I want to understand how the season is going», explains Paolo Pais from Auronzo, «I ask the supply wholesalers. These tell me that we are not at the levels of 2020, but we are back to 2019, which means that we are still in line with undoubtedly positive arrivals and presences. I am referring, above all, to Italian tourism, in particular from Veneto, which has occupied not only hotels but every other form of accommodation ».
