Zhou Quandi, a survivor of the Battle of Changjin Lake, is interviewed by reporters

In 1950, the Chinese People’s Volunteers went to the Korean battlefield to resist US aggression and aid Korea and defend the country. How tragic is the real battlefield? The 87-year-old survivor of the Battle of Changjin Lake and a veteran soldier now living in the nursing home for disabled revolutionary soldiers in Sichuan Province, Xindu District, Chengdu, recalled his experience in the Battle of Changjin Lake.

At the end of December 1950, the 26th Army of the Ninth Corps of the Chinese People’s Volunteers Army was ordered to enter Huangcaoling in the Changjin Lake area to attack the US Marine Corps First Division and the 31st Regiment of the US Seventh Division. In order to keep their actions confidential, Zhou Quan and his comrades stayed in ambush in the snow of minus 40 degrees for 3 days and 3 nights. Many comrades died because of this, and they remained in the position of holding weapons and preparing to fight until their deaths.

“We southerners have never experienced such a severe cold, cold into the bone marrow.” Zhou Quandi said, in the extreme cold, he and his comrades put cotton-padded clothes and trousers backwards for concealment, and used peppers to hydrate the snow to keep away the cold and fill their hunger for three days and three nights. Sleeplessly lay on the snow to complete the lurking block mission, “I am hungry, I only have 3 potatoes a day to fill my hunger; when I am thirsty, I grabbed the snow next to me and stuffed it in my mouth. When the charge horn blew, I found that I had no hands or feet. I feel that I can’t stand up anymore, and I don’t feel any pain when I stabbed it with a knife. I saw my comrades rush forward, and tears flowed down my eyes…”

After the battle, the comrades returned to the ground to search, and found Brother Zhou Quan who still had a hint of breath. He immediately carried him back to the health clinic under the rain of bullets and heavy snow that was waist-deep. Due to the lack of narcotic drugs, the doctor could only wrap his limbs with ice, and performed amputation while he was unconscious with a high fever. His 16-year-old brother Zhou Quan lost all his limbs.

When Zhou Quandi recalled his experience in the war to resist US aggression and aggression and enter Korea, he repeatedly said three words of “regret”. He did not regret his injuries on the battlefield. The regret in his life was that he did not kill the enemy himself and failed to complete the tasks assigned by the motherland. The Battle of Changjin Lake has always been buried deep in Zhou Quan’s heart, not only because it was the cruelest battle, it was a competition of will, but also because it changed the trajectory of a young man’s life, and because of the young man’s vows, After 71 years of trials and hardships, he is still as firm as ever. Zhou Quandi said: “Although I have lost my limbs, I have never regretted it!”

“Our company, the number one hundred sixty and seventy people, there is less than one platoon left (24 people). The party gave me a second life. The blood on my body belongs to the medical staff. Compared with the sacrificed comrades, I Very satisfied.” Zhou Quandi told reporters.

In 1953, Zhou Quandi was sent to a nursing home for disabled revolutionary soldiers in Sichuan Province. After recuperating, he overcame self-care, learning, and overcoming difficulties with a strong will that ordinary people could not imagine, and became a calligrapher with pens. He wrote his inspirational life, using his life and youth to charge forward all his life.

“I hope that young people today can inherit the unfinished business of our older generation, continue to contribute to the development of the motherland, serve the country, and make our motherland stronger!” said Zhou Quandi.
