It spyware (spy software) Pegasus, developed and marketed by the Israeli company Nso group, is able to bypass the security of smartphones, obtaining complete access to devices. It can copy sent or received messages, collect photos and record calls. It is also able to activate the phone’s camera and microphone without the owner’s knowledge to record conversations, track their movements or identify who they met.
An investigation conducted by a consortium coordinated by Forbidden stories, which also includes the Guardian, revealed the abuse of this technology by some governments. Among the people identified as possible targets are journalists, lawyers and human rights defenders.
