“We need courageous and immediate global action”. With these words, the Minister for Ecological Transition opened the G20 Environment, Climate and Energy in Naples which for two days (22 and 23 July) will see the ecological and energy transition as protagonists, under the Italian presidency which is responsible for the demanding task of ferrying the ministerial towards a common position of the 20 on various issues, from cutting emissions to biodiversity. “We are gathered here today in a context that underlines the key role played by ministries of the environment around the world in ensuring the security and foundations of post-pandemic society,” explained Cingolani. “The role of the environment has never been more important.” Today is perhaps the simplest day, the one on which the positions do not seem to be too distant, quite the contrary. At the heart of this opening of works, biodiversity, protected areas, circular economy. The first session will be dedicated to the «Natural capital to protect and manage» and will see a dialogue on the subject of scientific and international organizations and G20 groups.

“It is increasingly clear that the central challenge is how the financial system works and the extent to which it aligns with the needs of sustainable development,” continued Cingolani. “Without this alignment, sustainable development will remain out of our reach, with catastrophic consequences that we would leave for future generations. It is not simply a question of generating sufficient new financial resources to face environmental challenges but of ensuring that our actions do not damage the environment ».

In the second, the circular economy is the protagonist (“Joint efforts for a sustainable and circular use of resources”). Conclusions entrusted to Minister Cingolani, at the end of the day, when the G20 Environment Communiqué will also be adopted: towards a global commitment. The delegations are in fact working to produce, at the end of each day, a communique shared between the twenty countries that contains the outline of common visions and commitments.
