In Palermo murder at Vucciria: the boss’s son killed, the mafia war re-explodes

They waited for him, approached him on a scooter and fired three gunshots at him. An execution in full mafia style. Emanuele Burgio, a name that counts in Cosa Nostra – his father was a very loyal one of the boss Gianni Nicchi, an up-and-coming mafia boss who did business with his American cousins, who ended up in prison in 2009 – fell wounded to the ground. Rescued by some family members, the 26-year-old was taken to the emergency room of the Policlinico di Palermo. His condition immediately appeared very serious. The young man died shortly after.
As soon as the rumor of the ambush spread in his neighborhood, the Vucciria, about three hundred people arrived at the hospital. The news of the death sparked the anger of relatives and friends, who wanted to see Emanuele’s body. To restore calm, the police had to intervene.
The investigators – the investigation is coordinated by the DDA and conducted by the Flying Squad – believe it is a crime of the mafia. The modalities of the murder and the criminal environment in which the victim gravitated would confirm this. According to investigators, Emanuele ran the cocaine trade in the neighborhood and allegedly had disagreements with the Borgo Vecchio clan, a popular neighborhood not far from Vucciria.
The crime was filmed by the surveillance cameras of some rooms in the district, one of the main nightlife areas of the historic center, which immortalized the three hitmen arriving on two scooters and firing.
Warned by an anonymous phone call, the agents went to the scene of the crime: the area had been cleared. On the ground a few traces of blood and an abandoned helmet.
In the morning, the police took a number of people to the police station for questioning. They would be men from the Borgo Vecchio neighborhood with whom the victim had had some disagreements. Burgio’s grandmother allegedly pointed her finger at people from the popular district of Palermo as possible perpetrators of the crime.
“An unacceptable act of violence in the city. The murder in Vucciria reminds us that we must never let our guard down against all forms of violence. I express my heartfelt thanks to the police and the judiciary for the intense work they are carrying out in these hours to shed light on the crime, ”said the mayor of Palermo, Leoluca Orlando.

There can be no steps back on the road to legality. We ask to intensify the presence on the territory, social control and zero tolerance towards all forms of violence. The historic center, as is happening in these hours, is turning into an area of ​​widespread illegality, tolerated and even justified. Now is the time to move forward and to make a common front to guarantee citizens safety and legality ».
