According to a recent study, people living in the vast open spaces of the western United States appear to have reported UFO sightings more frequently. The investigation delves into environmental aspects that influence the likelihood of reporting unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP), a term that encompasses more than just UFOs to include objects observed in the sky, space and underwater.

I study

This study, reported by Sharmila Kuthunur on Space.com, analyzed approximately 98,000 sightings over two decades, linking them to factors such as light pollution and proximity to military bases. The western United States has emerged as a hot spot for such reports, along with a smaller cluster in the Northeast.

A closer look at the results

Richard Medina, a geographer at the University of Utah and the study’s principal investigator, expressed surprise at the predominance of sightings in the West. The study, published in the journal Scientific Reports, [1] suggests that environmental variables significantly impact the number of reported sightings. Medina highlighted that the region’s open spaces and temperate climate likely contribute to people spending more time outdoors and, as a result, noticing more in the sky. This analysis is not just about identifying UAPs, but also understanding which sightings could pose a legitimate threat.

Historical hotspots and technological stories

The Western United States is no stranger to UFO lore, with places like Area 51 and Roswell being synonymous with alien conspiracy theories. The study notes these areas’ history with unorthodox aircraft tests and mysterious crashes, which could influence the high number of reports. For example, experimental aircraft testing at Area 51 has long fueled speculation about alien technology. Meanwhile, the 1947 Roswell incident, initially thought to be a “flying saucer” crash, was later revealed to be a military surveillance project.

What are they really seeing?

The researchers, while analyzing public data from the National UFO Research Center (NUFORC), took into account factors such as the visibility of the sky and the likelihood of there being objects in the sky due to human activity. Medina reflected on the essence of these sightings, considering the growing technology present in our skies.
Medina and his team now want to explore temporal patterns and other factors such as drone activity, which could further explain the sightings.
