More than 100,000 people could be accommodated in tents in the camp, located near the border with the Gaza Strip in Egypt’s Sinai Desert, reports the Wall Street Journal, citing Egyptian officials. Officials in Cairo denied the report. The construction work served other purposes, it was said.

Israel is currently planning a ground offensive in Rafah. The southernmost city in the Gaza Strip on the border with Egypt is considered Hamas’s last retreat. There are said to be well over a million Palestinians there, most of them refugees from other parts of the Gaza Strip.

In a phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, US President Biden again warned against a military operation in Rafah and called for the protection of the Palestinian civilian population. This was announced by the presidential office in Washington.

This message was sent on February 16, 2024 on the Deutschlandfunk program.
