Women’s football is on the rise. In England some small clubs pay the same salaries to the players as their male colleagues, big clubs like Arsenal have been promoting their development for some time and Sky and BBC broadcasters have begun to broadcast it. And also in Italy from 1 July the Serie A players will be recognized as professional athletes. The prospects are those of a potentially very profitable business.
But while players still have to fight for technical and salary recognition, the rise in popularity of women’s football also suggests a new, more peaceful and inclusive way to experience sport.
