Ivrea, in Canton Gabriel green light for the sewerage project

by admin

Works for 1.3 million euros essential to protect Lake San Michele. The asbestos-cement water pipes will also be replaced

IVREA. It will take another year to see the construction site start, but in the meantime a concrete step has been taken for the construction of the sewer network in via Canton Gabriel and via Chiavarotta. Last Tuesday the council led by the mayor Stefano Sertoli approved the final project of the Smat for 1.3 million. Among the planned interventions there is also the replacement of the water network, currently served by asbestos cement pipes (not dangerous for human health, but still to be eliminated).

These are works that should have already been carried out between the end of 2020 and the beginning of this year, as foreseen by the Ato3 area authority in planning investments in the area. “It is – explains the councilor for public works Michele Cafarelli – of a work that involves the construction of a section of sewer, to enslave that area that does not have it, with the installation of two waste lifting systems that will serve to remedy the criticalities deriving from the morphological structure of the territory. In addition to the sewerage, two aqueduct pipes will be replaced, one for supply and one for distribution: the existing ones are in asbestos-cement ».

The Canton Gabriel sewerage network represents a concrete commitment to protect Lake San Michele, one of the bodies of water that is part of the Five Lakes Park. In this sense, in the spring of 2019, there was also a collection of signatures from citizens (800) asking the mayor and the municipal administration to intervene on Smat to contain the delays accumulated in the design and implementation of the works.

Lake San Michele, as everyone knows by now, has been suffering from degradation for too many years, largely caused by an excessive intake of wastewater from the surrounding settlements, which is causing it to consolidate into a eutrophic state. For years, every spring, the waters of the lake have been tinged with red due to the flowering of toxic cyanobacteria of the Planktothrix Rubescens species, with consequent ordinance of the Municipality of prohibition of bathing and the use of boats, boats or canoes, as well as a ban on fishing aimed at consumption, in the waters of Lake San Michele.

The delays in the design by Smat are also recorded for another intervention, long overdue: the construction of the new spillway to the north east of the city, San Michele area to be clear, an area subject to flooding whenever it rains. We are talking about a work with a total cost of 1 million 220 thousand euros, which will be used to definitively solve the age-old problem, which recurs, promptly, in the event of persistent rain, of excessively flooded roads. The new sewer collector, in fact, will serve to lighten the sewage system from rainwater, which in this area of the city is of a mixed type (ie it receives both black and white water).
