Ivrea ready for a new jazz Festival: international guests, concerts and events

IVREA. That Massimo Barbiero, an internationally renowned musician, knew how to jump through hoops was well known, but these days he proved to have become a virtuoso when, last Monday 23, he found himself having to deal with the sudden cancellation of the Open Area Project, one of the most important events of the upcoming Open Papyrus jazz festival, concert scheduled for Saturday 4 September, due to serious health reasons of its highly anticipated leader, Patrizio Fariselli. Strengthened by a formidable network of acquaintances, the artistic director did not lose heart: the next day he managed to grab the great Laura Conti with Maurizio Verna, and, practically a few hours ago, on Thursday 26th, he had the confirmation that, in the same evening, the last coat of Pink (Kathya West, voice; Alberto Dipace, piano; Danilo Gallo, double bass) will also be present, a musical project that plunges its hands into the repertoire of an authentic monument of English music, the Pink Floyd, offering a series of elegant reinterpretations chamber, mainly taken from The Wall. «We are sincerely sorry that Fariselli, and with him his group, was forced to forfeit – affirms Barbiero -. We vote for his health and apologize to the audience for the cancellation of a concert we really cared about a lot ». And he adds: «On the evening of Saturday 4th, however, a high quality proposal is maintained and this makes me happy. In all this extemporaneous chaos, the attention and support of the councilor for Culture, Costanza Casali, was fundamental, which is absolutely not to be taken for granted, who since the beginning of our collaboration has shown great respect and desire to know in depth this now over forty-year reality. realities of the festival that make Ivrea the dean of Italian festivals ».

It is precisely from this communion of intent that the idea of a further appointment as prelude to the festival (which will be held from Friday 3 to Sunday 5 September next) was derived. It is an evening organized by Ciro Lubrano Lavadera, a great friend of the Open Papyrus jazz festival, in his wine shop Vino e dintorni, in via Arduino 67, Thursday 2, at 9 pm, with reservations required at 3471218447: it will begin with the presentation of two shorts by Theresa Lekberg, Tra mondi (with Roberta Tirassa and Lekberg herself; music by Massimo Barbiero and Marta Raviglia from the cd Gabbia) and Bluebells (with Roberta Tirassa; music by Juneberry, Lucia Leena and Judith Ferstl) and it will continue between notes, waiting for the festival, with the Novelli-Fiorini duo, composed of Novelli, a guitarist who combines classical technique with jazz harmony, and Giorgio Fiorini, a musician from Turin, on the double bass. The active collaboration of Ciro Lubrano Lavadera with the event will also be expressed, as for some years now, in the organization of the aperitifs-tasting that will follow, at 6.30 pm, the two book presentations, in Santa Marta, Friday 3 and Saturday 4.

The Open Papyrus jazz festival, having found organizational calm, therefore starts to experience this new, forty-first edition, always with its head held high, like its artistic director Massimo Barbiero who, consistent with his philosophy, has once again succeeded to ensure that the event, in addition to being a cultural and artistic operation, also represents a moment of reflection. “The important thing is that it is a popular demonstration and not a populist one,” says Barbiero. And it reiterates what was stated in the press conference for the presentation of the event, almost a month ago. «For a populist festival – he observes – it is enough for someone to invest 300,000 euros and call the most important names that there are: it would probably be sold out, leaving no sign. The primary responsibility of those who genuinely want to create culture, however, should be translated into something that remains forever what is achieved, a significant trace ». «It is certainly more risky – he concludes – but that must be the role of a cultural operator. Chand, as the great jazzman Giorgio Gaslini argued, he must leave traces, put the public in a position to think, to bring home a reflection linked to an emotion: if you fail to produce this, you have failed ».
