He went into the water after lunch, perhaps – some witnesses said – to help some children in difficulty in the waters of Lake Maggiore, in Baveno. Thus, in front of the mouth of the Selva Spessa river, the man whom the fire brigade and 118 rescuers found dead shortly after 2pm this afternoon drowned. The drowned man was called Felipe Thomazelli, 31, from Stresa. Witnessing the tragedy were his partner and two of his three children, aged 8 and 11.
Thomazelli, according to an initial reconstruction, had dived but after a few moments the family no longer saw him and raised the alarm asking for the help of the lifeguard of the private beach not far from the place where they saw him dive. The carabinieri of Verbania also intervened on the spot and are now investigating to reconstruct what happened. The 118 rescuers tried for a long time to revive the man but were unable to save his life.
