Landmark at Harkortsee disappears: Power plant chimney is removed – Ruhr area – News

The chimney was built in 1984. And so high that the smoke gases from the Ruhr Valley could escape over the adjacent Ardey Mountains. The power plant is now powered by gas and the chimney has since become unnecessary.

Dismantling from top to bottom

Now the white giant is being laboriously demolished piece by piece. A so-called spider excavator is used. It clings to the top of the chimney and nibbles away the reinforced concrete. It falls through the tube into a fall bed and is transported away.

Detonation is out of the question

The men who operate the excavator each time have to use a rack-and-pinion elevator mounted on the outside to go up to the top of the chimney. The demolition work on the Herdeck Cuno power plant is expected to take several months. How long exactly depends on the weather conditions.

A landmark is disappearing this year at Harkortsee in Herdecke: the chimney of the former Cuno coal-fired power plant

By the way, blasting is out of the question: the approximately six thousand tons of concrete rubble would fall down a slope and block an important connecting road between Herdecke and Wetter for a long time.

Souvenir for citizens

Citizens who want to have a souvenir of the huge chimney can contact the energy supplier “Mark-E”. He wants to give out small fragments of reinforced concrete to interested parties.
