Luis Gilberto Murillo, foreign minister in charge after suspension of Álvaro Leyva

Luis Gilberto Murillo, Colombia’s ambassador to the United States, was appointed today as acting Minister of Foreign Affairs. He will be in office, in principle, for the three months of the suspension ordered by the ¸ due to the scandal of the frustrated passport bidding.

The movements, the suspension of Leyva and the appointment of Murillo, were recorded in decree 0150 of February 8, 2024, in which, in addition, it was established that the three months that the new chancellor will in principle last run from this date. Thursday and that, in any case, the decision was also reported to the Public Ministry.

Álvaro Leyva must now face another process, of a criminal nature, for alleged contempt. And adjustments must be made at the Colombian Embassy in the United States.

uis Gilberto Murillo Urrutia is a Mining Engineer with a master’s degree in Engineering Sciences and an expert in public policy, with more than 30 years of experience in areas related to the environment, climate change, social inclusion and sustainable regional development.

Luis Gilberto Murillo Urrutia was born in Andagoya, Medio San Juan, he is 56 years old. He is a Mining Engineer from Moscow State University.

He was director of Codechocó, governor of Chocó on two occasions (1997 and 2011), vice president of the Phelps Stokes Foundation, director of the Todos Somos Pazcífico program, Minister of the Environment in the Santos government and candidate for Vice President for the Centro Esperanza Coalition.
