“I really loved the atmosphere of this scene, and I still love it,” explains Majid Majidi, director of Children of the sun. “At the beginning of the film, when the children climb over the wall to enter the school, the director scolds them. But now it is he who finds himself in front of the closed gates ”.
The film is set in the outskirts of Tehran and tells some aspects of Iranian society, such as exploitation and child labor, through the story of Ali, a 12-year-old boy, and his friends, forced to work and commit thefts to contribute to the sustenance of the family. The opportunity to find a hidden treasure in the basement of the Scuola del Sole will convince them to resume their studies.
Children of the sun, in Italian cinemas from 2 September, was presented in competition at the seventy-seventh Venice Film Festival.
Majid Majidi is an Iranian director, screenwriter and film producer. Among his works The boys of heaven (1997), the first Iranian film nominated for an Oscar as best foreign film.
