In Mali, access to education and work for women is complicated due to the patriarchal traditions still widespread in the country. Half of the girls marry before the age of 18 and only 37 percent attend secondary school. The war that broke out in 2012 has exposed them to abuse and violence, and the youngest are forced to emigrate from rural areas to the capital, Bamako, where they work as domestic workers. With the risk of being lured into criminal networks.
But there are those who resist. The Addad association, for example, protects the rights of these rural workers, helping them to maintain contact with their families. Photographer Kani, on the other hand, uses art to denounce the chauvinism of the society in which she grew up.
The video reportage by Davide Lemmi, Marco Simoncelli and Ugo Lucio Borga.
