According to French media, the man entered the building, in rue Fresnel in the 16th arrondissement of the French capital, around 11 a.m. this morning. He then allegedly took off his jacket, revealing “a grenade or an explosive vest”, the French news agency AFP reported, citing police sources. According to witnesses, the man laid flags on the floor of the consulate and wanted to avenge his brother’s death.

The embassy itself contacted the emergency center to report the presence of the suspicious man, Europe1 reports. According to that French news channel, the man has locked himself in a room in the consulate together with an ambassador.

The BRI, an elite unit of the French police, is present in large numbers at the building. A security perimeter has been set up and, for safety reasons, the metro lines passing in the area have already been interrupted.
