Police had to arrest the driver of a van on Monday for trying to drive onto a local ski slope. The man said he wanted to avoid the Mont Blanc tunnel toll.

“I have to deliver fabrics in France.” That was the statement that a 24-year-old driver from Belarus gave to the police. The man was stopped on Monday evening in the Italian municipality of La Thuile. The man tried to drive onto a ski slope at the Espace San Bernardo, a French-Italian ski resort.

The man was already half a kilometer away when he was spotted. The man in his twenties had earlier stopped to put snow chains on his vehicle, the director of the resort at the foot of the mountain told local media. “He told us he wanted to save the Mont Blanc tunnel toll.”

Despite the intervention of skiers and resort staff, the man had no intention of stopping. But he changed his mind when the carabinieri arrived on the scene.

His vehicle was searched and his statement about supplying substances was confirmed. The man underwent an alcohol test which turned out to be negative. He was fined 200 euros and asked to return to France via the Mont Blanc tunnel.
