Mario Draghi’s speech on the occasion of 25 April

by admin

The Prime Minister, Mario Draghi, together with the Minister of Culture, Dario Franceschini and accompanied by the president of the museum Antonio Parisella visited – before his speech on 25 April – the three floors of the historical museum of the Liberation in via Tasso, in Rome. In particular, the premier saw the headquarters of the German security service and security police; the cell where Giuliano Vassalli and Lieutenant Arrigo Paladini were held prisoners and where there are documentary evidence of the prisoners held in via Tasso and killed in the Fosse Ardeatine and Forte Bravetta and those in the prison in via Tasso.

April 25, Draghi: “Not all Italians were good people, not choosing is immoral”

This is his integral speech at the end of the visit. «I thank you for inviting me, but above all for this very moving visit. We see the daily suffering of a defenseless people, without freedom, without food, in terror. Through these photos, these posters, these alarms, these threats. On this occasion, I really thank you. This is a symbolic place of our national memory. Via Tasso evokes, even in family memories, the horror of the Nazi occupation, the ferocity of dictatorships. When the museums also reopen, I hope that, with the necessary precautions, many young people will have the opportunity to visit these rooms, to learn the stories of so many freedom fighters who were tortured and killed here, to understand up to basically the meaning of their sacrifice. And to understand that, without their courage, today we would not have the freedoms and rights we enjoy. Freedom and rights that are not won forever and cannot be exchanged for anything. They are more fragile than you think ».

“We must not only address young people but all our fellow citizens. Because the duty of remembrance concerns everyone. No one excluded. We are witnessing today, often dismayed, the evident signs of a progressive loss of collective memory of the facts of the Resistance, on the values of which the Republic and our Constitution merge. And too many reductive and misleading revisionisms. This is why this anniversary must not grow old, it must not suffer the wear and tear of time. In knowing in depth the history of those years, of fascism and occupation Nazi, we will be more aware of the importance of republican values and how essential it is to defend them every day.We also note, with concern, the blurring of the borders that history has drawn between democracies and authoritarian regimes, sometimes even between victims and perpetrators. We see the perverse fascination of autocrats and persecutors of civil liberties grow, especially when it comes to feeding preg judgments against ethnic and religious minorities ».

April 25, Mario Draghi: “Freedom and rights cannot be exchanged for anything”

«The language of hate, which often leads to racism and anti-Semitism, always contains the seeds of potential violent actions. It should not be tolerated. It is a bad plant that generates consent for those who trample on freedom and rights – as if they were an avenger for the wrongs suffered – but above all it spreads the poison of indifference and apathy. Senator Liliana Segre wanted the words “Indifference” to be placed at the entrance to the memorial of the Shoah in Milan to remind us that, together with the partisans and freedom fighters, there were many who turned away in which – as she says – it’s easier to ignore it. In honoring the memory of those who fought for freedom we must also remember that we Italians were not all “good people”. We must remember that not choosing is immoral to use Artom’s words. It means killing, once again, those who showed courage in front of the occupiers and their allies and sacrificed themselves to allow us to live in a democratic country ».

“But it is in the reconstruction of the present, of a present in which memory serves to tell us what we do not want to repeat, that reconciliation takes place. It is reconstruction based on brotherhood, solidarity, love, justice that leads to reconciliation ”. «These rooms that once saw horrors from tomorrow will see visitors – we hope also many young visitors – who want to know the history of Italy. This is why I am very happy to celebrate the Liberation Day with you in a symbolic place, yes, of the darkest period experienced by our capital, but also today a symbol of the rebirth of the whole of Italy. Thank you”.
