Mark Lanegan, former leader of the Screaming Trees, has died at the age of 57

Mark Lanegan, one of the absolute pioneers of grunge with the Screaming Trees and then a soloist appreciated with his hoarse and guttural voice, died at the age of 57. He does not know at the moment the causes of death, according to what has been learned from the family. In 2021 he had become seriously ill with Covid, to the point of ending up in intensive care, an experience so dramatic that it had prompted him to write the autobiographical book, last December, «Devil in a coma». Written during his convalescence, he had been released in bookstores as if it were an extreme attempt to exorcise his difficult existence on this earth.

Lanegan had been hanging by a thread for over three weeks. He had been in and out of a coma numerous times, to the point of losing his hearing, even if only temporarily. In his memoir, he did not just tell the disease but he retraced his story, back in time.

In a recent interview he explained that he felt “much better” and that he had “finally turned the corner” in his fight against the Cornavirus. “But it took a really long time. It was crazy. I still have some aftermath. Whatever I had, it attacks the places where there has been a trauma in the body in the past – he said -. And I’ve had quite a few accidents in my life. I have a chronically fucked knee that still gives me some pain. This was one of the weirdest aspects of it: it was going to nestle in any place where you were hurt or where something had happened before. ‘

His passing was announced on his social media profiles with a post: «Our beloved Mark Lanegan died this morning at his home in Killarney, Ireland. Beloved singer, songwriter, author and musician, he was 57 years old. He leaves his wife, Shelley. ‘ “No other information is available at the moment”, the note reads, “the family asks everyone to respect their privacy at this time”.

Various drug and alcohol abuse had given him the label of “grunge’s last survivor.” His deep, hoarse voice has undoubtedly marked the last thirty years of alternative rock. At the dawn of grunge, in the mid-eighties, Lanegan was the voice of the Screaming Trees, a band born in Ellensuburg, Washington, from a group of difficult kids. Then his solo career, his unforgettable, recent cover albums in which he showed how much more there was to dig into the standards of American song. And then the collaborations: from Queens of the Stone Age to Greg Dulli of Afghan Wings.
