World Biodiversity Day is celebrated on Saturday 22 May: an initiative to which the Metropolitan City of Turin is particularly sensitive, which has included in its strategic and territorial planning tools the goal of conserving the natural ecosystems of the territory and connecting them to each other .

The Wide Area Authority manages 8 protected natural areas and 21 Sites of the Natura 2000 Network, pursuing precisely the protection of biodiversity and the guarantee of the maintenance of ecosystem services. Furthermore, through the European project LUIGI-Linking Urban and Inner Alpine Green Infrastructures funded by the Alpine Space program, the Metropolitan City continues the study and enhancement of the pilot case, identified in the area of the park of the Cinque Laghi di Ivrea which will soon be established. .

Wednesday 26 May from 2 to 5 pm at the Bertagnolio theater in Chiaverano, in via del Teatro 19, a round table is scheduled in the presence, to take stock of the first research activities carried out in the area, to face the reading of the present reality in a participatory form and share perspectives for future developments. The round table is reserved for the administrators of the Municipalities of Ivrea, Borgofranco d’Ivrea, Burolo, Cascinette d’Ivrea, Chiaverano and Montalto Dora, to explore together the theme of ecosystem services and the effects on the 5 Lakes area. The meeting will be followed by an activity on the territory that will involve citizens from 6 to 12 June.

The site of community interest of the Ivrea Lakes includes a total area of 1,599 hectares, declared a Special Conservation Area and since 2018 managed directly by the Metropolitan City of Turin on delegation of the Piedmont Region. Thanks to the European project LUIGI, a photographic survey is underway entrusted to the Urban Reports team, which includes a series of inspections in the territory involved, aimed at understanding what its biodiversity consists of and what are the human activities that, directly or indirectly , use the natural capital available. Photography is intended as an investigation tool to raise awareness of the value of the landscape and the use of environmental, cultural and historical resources, but it is also a cultural and narrative tool to give voice to the complexity of territorial systems. The survey and photographic interpretation dedicated to the 5 Lakes area are aimed at investigating and evaluating the green infrastructures that can favor the ecological, economic and cultural connection between rural and urban areas.
