The accident Wednesday on provincial 81. The victim was on his way home from the cemetery where his wife is buried

MAZZÈ

A 93-year-old retiree lost his life in a road accident that occurred at around 11.30 on Wednesday in the Tonengo di Mazzè hamlet, along the provincial road 81, at the crossroads with Viale Europa. His name was Giulio Mila and he lived alone in via Cairelli in Mazzè.

Lucid and autonomous, despite his advanced age, on Wednesday the retiree decided to take his Fiat Panda to go to the cemetery, where his wife, who died two years ago, rests. While returning home, he lost control of the vehicle, in all probability due to an illness: he collapsed on the steering wheel while the Panda crashed into a wall on the side of the intersection with via Europa and then stopped in the center of the roadway. Fortunately, no other means passed in that instant.

A passing motorist called 112 a few minutes after the accident. Unfortunately, the resuscitation attempts by the 118 medical team were useless: the elderly retiree died instantly.

After a first visit by the medical examiner of the ASL / To4, the body of Giulio Mila was taken to the mortuary of the Chivasso hospital to establish the exact cause of death, which should not be linked to the accident. Even if the impact against the wall was violent: the Fiat Panda was completely destroyed in the front: the bumper came off and so did one of the wheels. The car was then secured by the Ivrea firefighters, while the Caluso carabinieri will have the task of reconstructing the exact dynamics of the accident.

To allow for reliefs and relief efforts, the stretch of provincial road was closed to transit by the Mazzè civil protection group, for a couple of hours, from the roundabout along the road that leads to the center of Mazzè up to the intersection with via Europa.

Two of Giulio Mila’s grandchildren arrived at the scene of the accident, who remained for a long time next to the grandfather still lying in his driving seat. “My grandfather was fine and independent. But usually he preferred to go on foot – the two grandchildren said, still shaken -. He lived alone and was happy that he could still be independent. During the summer he took care of his large garden and also of the vegetable garden. His state of health was good ».

The deputy mayor of Mazzè, Bruno Mila, who coordinates the civil protection group, also remembers him well: «I saw him almost daily when he took his afternoon walk: a man still strong, certainly a legacy of his working past. He had been the foreman of important works around Italy ».

The date of the funeral has not yet been set pending the authorization from the Prosecutor of Ivrea. –
