Former PRM representative Miguel Gutiérrez sentenced to 16 years in US for drug trafficking and money laundering

Former representative of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), Miguel Gutiérrez, has been sentenced to 16 years in prison in the United States for the crimes of conspiracy to distribute cocaine and money laundering. Gutiérrez’s defense argued that his actions were driven by desperation caused by a failing business.

The Akrivis Group law firm, which represents Gutiérrez, stated that his crimes were a result of financial desperation caused by a failing business. They mentioned that Gutiérrez was known for his generosity and good works when he was in a better financial position.

According to documents revealed by his defense team, Gutiérrez used family businesses to launder profits from drug trafficking, totaling 6 million dollars between 2014 and 2020.

During his time at the Miami Federal Detention Center, Gutiérrez was placed in solitary confinement twice due to mental health issues. His defense team highlighted the challenges he faced during this time, including isolation, frustration, and difficulties communicating with his family and lawyer.

The defense argued that a sentence close to 20 years in prison was not necessary and that Gutiérrez was remorseful for his actions. They also mentioned that his family, especially his ten children, had suffered during the process.

The resignation of Gutiérrez from his position as deputy from the province of Santiago was announced in September 2022, a year after the events leading to his sentencing in the United States.
