Ministry of Ecology and Environment: Dust weather is expected this winter and next spring, the air pollution prevention and control situation is still serious

China News Service, Beijing, October 29th (Reporter Yulin Ruan) Liu Shusheng, the first-level inspector of the Department of Eco-Environmental Monitoring of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment of China, told reporters in Beijing on the 29th that it is expected that there will still be a high probability of sand and dust weather this winter and next spring, and the frequency may be higher than the historical average. Compared with previous years, the atmospheric diffusion conditions of this winter and next spring are basically close to or slightly deviated, and the situation of air pollution prevention and control is still severe.

Liu Shusheng said that in order to study and judge the atmospheric diffusion conditions this winter and next spring and the possible impact, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment organized relevant scientific research institutions to conduct monthly consultations on the air quality situation in autumn and winter, forming three basic judgments.

First, in terms of sand and dust weather, precipitation in the sand source areas of northern Asia may show a trend of less precipitation this winter and next spring, and the overall ecological status of the region is deviated. It is expected that there will be a high probability of sandstorms in this winter and next spring, and the frequency of occurrence may be higher than the historical average, but the possibility of strong sandstorms is relatively low.

Second, a weak to moderate La Niña event is expected to occur in winter. According to forecasts by the Meteorological Department, the winter climate this year may be relatively cold, and parts of China may be affected by stronger or frequent cold air processes, which is relatively conducive to the diffusion of pollutants.

Third, the overall deviation of atmospheric diffusion conditions in North China. At present, the forecast results of major international climate forecasting agencies are still being adjusted. The overall judgment of the atmospheric diffusion conditions in North China from February to March 2022 is: the temperature is close to the annual average level or slightly higher, and the precipitation is close to the annual average level or slightly More, the relative humidity near the ground is higher, and the wind field near the ground is more likely to have a southerly wind than usual, which is not conducive to the diffusion of pollutants.

Liu Shusheng said that, on the whole, compared with previous years, the atmospheric diffusion conditions of this winter and next spring are basically close to or slightly deviated, and the situation of air pollution prevention and control is still severe. In the next step, we will continue to track and judge the heavy pollution process in autumn and winter and the possible sand and dust weather process, and release forecast information and warning prompts in a timely manner.
