In the Waasland port area of the port of Antwerp, customs found more than a ton of cocaine hidden in a container from Brazil at the end of February. The drugs have a street value of more than 80 million euros. The federal judicial police started an investigation into smuggling and drug seizures. No further details were known at first.

The investigation progressed smoothly and in the aftermath, about ten people were released from their beds on Wednesday. House searches then took place in Ghent and other places in East Flanders. The people were intensively interrogated by the police. It is not yet clear whether arraignments will take place before the investigating judge.

The East Flanders public prosecutor’s office is currently sparse with information. It confirms that the federal judicial police have acted in the context of a judicial investigation. They do not want to say anything about the arrests and the number for the time being. The East Flemish public prosecutor’s office and the federal judicial police will communicate more about the file on Thursday.
