Since April 16, the northward Asian elephants have migrated for more than 110 days, traveling more than 1,300 kilometers in a roundabout way, passing through 3 prefectures and 8 counties and cities in Yuxi, Honghe and Kunming. At 20:08 on August 8, 14 Asian elephants moved north and safely crossed the main stream of the Yuanjiang River and returned south. In addition to the male sub-adult elephants that were returned to the Xishuangbanna National Nature Reserve on July 7, all 15 Asian elephants that moved north returned safely to the south.
“The overall condition of the elephant herd is stable, and no human or elephant casualties have been caused along the way. Wan Yong said that although the elephant group has passed through Yuanjiang safely, relevant safety precautions and emergency response work will continue until the elephant group enters the suitable habitat in Mojiang County, Pu’er City, and is transferred to Pu’er City and Xishuangbanna Prefecture for normalized management.
